Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 2 E 6 The J Team

Go To

The Dark Hand goes hunting for the legendary Pan Ku box, which will lead them to the eight Demon Portals. Jackie and Uncle alone cannot handle the Dark Hand, who has the Talismans, so Jade recruits El Toro Fuerte, Viper, and the reformed Tohru to form the J-Team.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Arc Words: "TALISMANS ARE NOT IMPORTANT!!!"
  • Bewitched Amphibians: The episode ends with Captain Black turning himself into a frog when he tries to cast one of Uncle's chi spells.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The newly formed J-Team manages to defeat the Dark Hand and retrieve the talismans from them, but Shendu succeeds at getting the Pan'Ku Box beginning the start of the Demon Sorcerers arc.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Despite needing to get the Pan'Ku Box from the Dark Hand, Jackie decides it's time for the J-Team to end despite Jade's objections, not that he wanted their help anyway.
  • Call-Back: Hak Foo tries to use the Tiger talisman to provide physical balance, unaware that the talisman's actual power involves spiritual balance. Jade made the same mistake in "The Tiger And The Pussycat".
  • Exact Words: Tohru is told to take care of both Uncle's shop and Jade, but she makes Captain Black watch the shop so that Tohru can follow her to Tibet to keep an eye on her. The rest of the J-Team in turn do obey Uncle's order to get out of his shop… but he said nothing about following him and Jackie to Tibet.
  • Get Out!: Uncle, to El Toro, Paco, and Viper when he goes out with Jackie and leaves Tohru to watch over his shop and Jade.
Uncle: The rest of you, GET OUUUUT!
  • Gondor Calls for Aid: Jade starts "the J-Team" with characters in previous encounters, in order to help Jackie and Uncle fight the Dark Hand. Too bad for her that Jackie isn't having it. Too bad for him that she brings them along anyway.
  • Good Hurts Evil: Though possessing another human, Shendu cannot touch the Pan'ku Box without hurting himself due to its light magic, but he needs it to release his siblings. He tries a variety of methods to take it, such as having his minions grab it (the J-Team distracts them), using a staff to push it (it electrocutes him), and covering his hands with clothes (the cloth bursts into flame, but it works long enough for him to put the artifact in another box.)
  • Honor Before Reason: After Captain Black's superiors decide the Dark Hand is out of Section 13's jurisdiction, Jackie insists on stopping the Dark Hand with only Uncle to assist him and doesn't listen to Jade's argument that he definitely needs extra muscle against the Talisman-wielding crooks. He refuses to trust Viper since he doesn't know for sure if she's truly reformed, but he gives no other coherent reason to reject the rest of the J-Team's assistance.
  • Hope Spot: Uncle believes that they are successful in preventing the Dark Hand from getting the Pan'Ku Box. Unfortunately, Jade and Paco tell him otherwise (Because the adults weren't willing to listen).
  • Internal Reveal: During the first skirmish, the Enforcers learn that Tohru is alive after last seeing him get sent flying by Shendu in the season finale...along with immediately learning he's now their enemy.
  • Ironic Echo: Viper says she an "ex-super thief", but when she shows up while arguing with Jackie about getting the talismans from the Dark Hand, she calls herself "super thief". Jackie said "ex-super thief" to remind her of what she said to him before this happened.
  • Kryptonite Factor: Touching objects forged of good magic like the Pan'ku Box harms Shendu, hence why he needs the Dark Hand to carry the box for him.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: When El Toro arrives at Uncle's shop, he starts grappling with Tohru, since Tohru was serving as a Dark Hand enforcer in their last meeting. Jackie has to explain that Tohru's turned good since then, and El Toro apologizes about the confusion.
  • MacGuffin: The Dark Hand retrieves an Ancient Artifact called the Pan'Ku Box, which was used to banish Shendu's fellow demons eons ago. The Box itself can open different gates to release each one, but its creators make sure Good Hurts Evil to prevent anyone like Shendu himself from using it.
  • Mistaken for Thief: Uncle thinks El Toro is a thief because he is wearing his trademark mask. When Jackie tried to correct him, he smacks him, thinking he's saying the wrong thing about him.
Jackie: Uncle, he is no thief. He's...
    [Uncle smacks him]
Uncle: Of course he is a thief! He's wearing a mask!
    • Inverse when Viper enters the shop and Jackie, recognizing her profession (before she said she isn't a thief anymore), attempts to kick her out, only for Uncle to smack him again as if he thinks he's doing the wrong thing with her.
Jackie: Viper? [attempting to kick her out] No thieves allowed at Uncle's...
    [Uncle smacks him]
Uncle: How can she be the thief? She's not wearing a mask and wrecking my store!
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: During the first confrontation with the Enforcers, El Toro tosses the bed they were on. Unfortunately, Jackie immediately points out that the talismans were on it as well.
    El Toro: Sorry!
  • Not Now, Kiddo: The J-Team keeps ignoring Jade and Paco's warnings that Valmon is getting the Pankku box; they finally get to say it long after the Enforces have skedaddled.
  • Now You Tell Me: A two-fer. Uncle explains how the talismans are not important before going on an exposition on the Pan'ku box...which was what Jade and Paco were trying to tell the adults this entire time.
  • Oh, Crap!: Uncle when learning Valmont's gang now has the means to unleash Shendu's fellow demons, especially since Jade and Paco kept trying to tell the adults this multiple times.
  • Pet the Dog: The Enforcers are genuinely happy to initially see Tohru, thinking that he died fighting Shendu. This changes when they learn he's done a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Upon seeing Tohru, El Toro, still thinking he's part of the Dark Hand, immediately gets into a scuffle with him.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: Viper isn't a superthief anymore, she's an "Ex-Superthief" now, but Jackie doesn't believe it.
  • Reformed Criminal: Viper from this episode onwards.
Jackie: I especially can't get help from a super thief.
Viper: Ex-super thief. Went legit after the Pink Puma fiasco.
  • Yo-Yo Plot Point: Much like the first episode, Uncle insists that a targeted artifact isn't as important as Jackie claims. He eventually clarifies what he means near the end; In this case, while the Talismans do tip the scales in a team's favor, and the J-Team got them all back, the ruins containing the Pan'ku Box, which the Dark Hand now possesses, plays a bigger role for this season.
  • You Watch Too Much X: Jackie's opinion on Jade assembling the J-Team.
Jackie: I'm sorry you all came this way for nothing, but I didn't realize my niece read so many comic books.
